General Information

-Founded in 1914 as Travelers’ Aid San Francisco
-One of the longest operating social services agencies in California
-Programs provide housing, education, and employment services to San Francisco homeless/at-risk families with children

Client Demographics

-Approximately 3,500 children and parents served annually
-50 percent under 18 years of age
-90 percent below the federal poverty line
-Majority are single mothers with one or two children


To help homeless families and families at imminent risk for homelessness to achieve housing stability, family well-being, and self-sufficiency


-Help families secure and maintain permanent housing
-Provide families with the tools to become economically self-sufficient
-Support the healthy physical, emotional, and social development of children

Programs and Services

Compass Connecting Point: centralized assessment, counseling, and referral center for San Francisco families facing a housing crisis
Compass Family Shelter:
emergency shelter, with supportive services and long-term follow-up care
Compass Clara House:
two-year transitional housing with comprehensive supportive services for homeless families
Compass Children’s Center:
nationally accredited early childhood and education center for homeless and extremely low-income toddlers and children
Compass SF HOME:
intensive support services combined with rent subsidies to help families avert homelessness
Compass Family Resource Center:
services to aid parents in building, strengthening, and maintaining healthy relationships with their children
Compass Clinical Services:
critical mental health services to clients
