"Compass is teaching me how to manage my life and support my children. We're learning to be a family again."
Barbara had always described herself as an independent person. A single mother and a recovered drug addict, she made many efforts to find affordable housing, with no luck. Through friends, she heard about Compass Family Services. At Connecting Point, Tasha and her family received emergency assistance and support until a room was available at Compass Family Shelter. While there, her family counselor encouraged her to sign up for every available subsidized housing waiting list. When she finally found a studio apartment, Compass helped her put down the deposit and furnish her home with goods donated to Compass for families in need. With housing in place, she was able to concentrate on employment. After an intensive job hunt, Barbara started working as a cashier at Macy’s. She is now committed to working hard to advance her position and wants to study to become a substance abuse counselor to be a role model for other parents who have experienced addiction and homelessness.
